Sample Connect Activities
The purpose of the course I’m developing is to teach volunteer church office assistants the importance of maintaining confidentiality of sensitive information. Because of the nature of the course, connect activities are vital. If the information doesn't connect with the learner's real life, then it will be an utter failure. So, throughout the course there are reflection questions and rhetorical questions to aid in the process of connecting the material to what they will do in the future. Here are a few examples:
• See Sample Do #2 ("What About You?"). Following the activity where learners categorize personal information about themselves as "confidential" or "public" comes the "connect":
For personal reflection...
How would you feel if the information in your "confidential" file folder became public knowledge?
• After Sample Absorb #1 ("Jenny's Story"), learners are asked to write 2-3 sentences describing a time when something similar happened to them. Then they are asked a simple "connect" question and given sample answers:
How did you feel? (check all that apply)
• See Sample Do #2 ("What About You?"). Following the activity where learners categorize personal information about themselves as "confidential" or "public" comes the "connect":

___ angry
___ humiliated ___ hurt |
___ betrayed
___ stupid ___ naïve |
___ violated
___ unloved ___ scared ___ other |
• In Sample Do #1, learners are asked what they should do when confronted with various situations where they may be likely to breach confidentiality. That activity is followed by Sample Absorb #2, which helps supply the principles they need to keep in mind before sharing information (Is it kind? Is it true? etc.). After learners create their own unique list of principles (from those provided plus some of their own) in a "do" activity, they are given a "connect" opportunity to print a job aid to help them remember the principles in the real world. This is what connects the learning to the learner's everyday life following the instruction. To the right is a sample of the job aid. |
